It wasn't a superhero who saved the day at Comic-Con 2024.
The California Department of Justice deployed a human trafficking task force to conduct an undercover sting operation targeting sex buyers who were using the comic book convention "to seek out potential victims," according to a press release from California Attorney General Rob Bonta.
As a result of the operation from July 25 to 27, 14 alleged sex buyers were arrested and 10 victims were recovered—including one 16-year-old child—at the event in San Diego, Calif., per the attorney general.
"Law enforcement personnel worked undercover as sex buyers to identify and contact potential victims of trafficking and arrest their traffickers," read the July 30 press release. "As part of the operation, undercover law enforcement personnel also posted undercover advertisements soliciting sex to arrest sex buyers."
Once the arrests were made, Child Welfare Services and more support services were on hand to assist the victims, according to the attorney general.
“Unfortunately, sex traffickers capitalize on large scale events such as Comic-Con to exploit their victims for profit,” Bonta said in a statement. “These arrests send a clear message to potential offenders that their criminal behavior will not be tolerated."
In another statement, San Diego Sheriff Kelly Martinez called human trafficking the most "insidious crime."
“The coercion and violence which enslaves people for profit and places them into forced labor or sex is criminal," she added. "As the Sheriff I support the efforts of all our justice partners in holding perpetrators accountable. I appreciate the focus that was placed on the recent convention to identify and rescue victims of human trafficking.”
This year’s Comic-Con hosted several celebrity panels over the weekend, with Marvel Studios bringing out Anthony Mackie, Harrison Ford, Vanessa Kirby and Pedro Pascal on stage. Hugh Jackman, Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy also made appearances to discuss their new Deadpool & Wolverine film before the studio announced that Robert Downey Jr. would be rejoining the MCU as the next Doctor Doom.
